The organizers of the III International Conference „Jews in Galicia” welcome submissions of the applications for the conference which will be held in person in Kraków on October 10-12, 2023 [changed date].

In recent years research on Jewish heritage in Galicia has been developed in many countries what we could observed during the international conferences organized by scholars associated with the Jagiellonian University and the University of Rzeszów in 2017 and 2019. From the beginning, we planned these events as cyclical, but due to the pandemic, we are returning to organizing this conference only now. The first conference on “Jews in Galicia” that took place in Rzeszów in 2017 was very successful and gathered academics from many countries that are interested in research on Jewish heritage in Galicia. The selected papers from the conference were published as a book “Z dziejów i kultury Żydów w Galicji/From the History and Culture of Jews in Galicia”, Rzeszów 2018. The second conference took place in Kraków in 2019 at the Galicia Jewish Museum , and selected papers were published in volume 18 (2020) of “Scripta Judaica Cracoviensia”.

This time we organize the conference again in Kraków at the Galicia Jewish Museum and we are glad that the Museum became the partner and host of the event. Adding the Museum to the conference organizers has a positive impact, because our conference, whose main goal is to present the state of research on the history of Jews in Galicia and its heritage, received additional social and popularizing dimensions, and we also hope to create a cohort of researchers dealing with this subject.

Chronologically the conference will focus on history of Jews in Galicia in years 1772-1918, but we invite also presentations on the heritage of Galician Jewry in a wider historical context as well as Jewish relations with the non-Jewish population in Galicia. The invitation is directed to all scholars who are interested in and dealing with a topic related to Jews in Galicia and would like to present original papers on that topic. We are inviting proposals from the one of the following fields of research:

  • scope and forms of Jewish cultural life
  • Jewish religious life (Jewish spirituality)
  • Jewish self-government
  • everyday life of Jews in cities, towns and villages
  • economic activity of the Jewish population
  • social and political activities
  • relations of Jews with Poles, Ukrainians and Germans
  • literature and memoirs: Jewish, Polish, German and Ukrainian writings about the Jewish population
  • Jewish genealogy (exemplification of current research and research postulates)
  • the issues of memory and commemoration; descendants of Galician Jews and their attitude to the country of their ancestors.

The language of the conference will be English. Applications for participation in the conference (see the attached form) should be sent by April 30, 2023. Along with the application, please send the paper abstract (500-700 words) and a short CV. The conference program will be announced by the end of July 2023.
